Latin American Youth Nuclear Forum 2024
In 2024, Rosatom and its international youth advisory council Impact Team 2050, in partnership with the Latin American Observatory on Energy Geopolitics (OLAGE), organized the Latin American Youth Nuclear Forum, held at the headquarters of the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) in Rio de Janeiro, with the support of Eletrobras Eletronuclear
The event celebrated the 70th anniversary of the inauguration of the world’s first nuclear power plant and brought together 50 young students and professionals from Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, and El Salvador. Throughout the forum, participants discussed the role of nuclear energy as a clean and strategic source for the energy transition in Latin America, in a context marked by the relevance of global agendas such as the G20, the COP30, and Brazil’s presidency of the BRICS+.

The forum also featured the participation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Jóvenes por el Clima, Movimiento Propacha, and the University of El Salvador. Through panels, practical sessions, and collaborative activities, the event aimed to demystify nuclear energy and explore its potential to drive inclusive and sustainable development.
As part of the program, participants took part in a technical visit to the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant, including the Nuclear Observatory, Angra 2 Nuclear Power Plant, and the construction site of Angra 3, as well as the Advanced Training Center, where the group observed a new team of operators in the Angra 1 Control Room simulator. These activities, accompanied by representatives from the Nuclear Directorate, the Construction Superintendency, and the Training Department, enriched participants’ understanding of the nuclear sector in Brazil and its essential role in a sustainable energy transition in Latin America
At the end of the forum, young leaders shared their perspectives on the energy transition in their countries and presented concrete proposals to strengthen energy sovereignty and sustainability in the region. The meeting also marked the launch of a tri-national project involving Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil, aimed at expanding outreach and awareness of the peaceful applications of nuclear energy within local communities. The Latin American Youth Nuclear Forum 2024 has established itself as a space for learning, cooperation, and the building of a network committed to Latin America’s energy future — connecting past, present, and future on the path to a just and sustainable energy transition.
