Young leaders from Latin America will present proposals for promoting nuclear technologies at COP30

The future of clean energy for an entire continent is being discussed not in ministerial cabinets or corporate offices, but in a forum full of young scientists, environmental activists, and visionaries.

On September 4-5, The II Latin American Youth Nuclear Forum was held in São Paulo, bringing together 50 young leaders from eight countries to answer one important question: can nuclear energy be a key factor in combating climate change?

The forum was held under the slogan "Pensar nuclear é pensar em futuro, sustentabilidade e colaboração“ (”Thinking about nuclear energy means thinking about the future, sustainability, and collaboration") and became a crossroads of ideas — a platform where environmental ambitions met cutting-edge technologies, and young scientists and researchers with world-renowned names could discuss the prospects for nuclear energy.

We gathered ideas and turned them into a roadmap that will be part of the preparations for the UN COP30 Climate Change Conference. These are not distant plans. These are projects initiated by young people from different countries who are ready to tackle climate challenges with the help of nuclear technologies

The forum was held at the Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN), so during the program of events, participants were able to see how innovations work in practice. They visited radioactive waste management centers, research reactors, and laser laboratories. Each excursion turned abstract debates into real opportunities.

The sessions covered a wide range of topics, from small modular reactors that can complement renewable energy to breakthroughs in nuclear medicine and agricultural solutions that can strengthen food security for millions of people.
“This is how the region builds expertise,” said Ruan Nunes, Vice President of “Rosatom Latin America”. “By connecting students, researchers, and environmental activists, we are not only improving education, but also bringing the future of affordable, safe, and sustainable nuclear technologies closer.”
The II Latin American Youth Nuclear Forum in São Paulo was a significant event organized by Impact Team 2050, a global initiative that brings together young leaders and nuclear industry experts to develop solutions to climate and social challenges. Together, they are rethinking the role of nuclear energy—not only as a legacy of the past, but also as a pillar of the future. This forum did more than just bring participants together. It formed a community of like-minded young scientists and became a platform from which they could send a clear message to governments and industry: action must be taken now, and young people are ready to contribute to and lead change.

Background Information
Impact Team 2050 is a global partnership initiative between Rosatom State Corporation and young people from different countries aimed at developing strategic solutions for interacting with an international audience based on the principles of sustainability and promoting the potential of the nuclear industry.

The Impact Team 2050 Council brings together 12 participants from 12 countries, including young scientists, engineers, managers, community leaders, and international activists in the field of sustainable development and climate change.

Impact Team 2050 promotes an interdisciplinary approach and social innovation by providing democratic access to scientific and technological knowledge for territories that have historically been excluded from such processes.

The main goal of the project is to stimulate the active participation of young people in the creation of real social initiatives, raise awareness of climate and territorial equality issues, and develop sustainable networks of interaction between public organizations, the scientific community, and government structures.
