Impact Team 2050 Events Marathon Launched in Latin America

This year, the events in Latin America are united under the motto “Pensar nuclear é pensar em futuro, sustentabilidade e colaboração” (“Nuclear energy means caring for the future, sustainability, and cooperation”) and are being held in the run-up to the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will take place in Brazil in November 2025.

The series of Impact Team 2050 events was opened by The Hackathon of Sustainability, held in Maipú on August 29–30 (Mendoza Province, Argentina). The opening ceremony was attended by Maipú Mayor Matias Stevanato, President of the Maipú Council Yamila Cerezo, Maipú Youth Affairs Director, member of the Impact Team 2050 Youth Advisory Board and The Hackathon Organizing Committee Ignacio Villarroya.

The Hackathon demonstrated the significant potential of the youth community in developing projects aimed at strengthening social and territorial justice. The event became a unique platform where young people actively shape the present and create the future.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of our community to demonstrate their potential. Science and technology are the foundation that ensures sustainable development

Ignacio Villarroya also emphasized the importance of organizing such events for local communities: “I am confident that thanks to the Hackathon, we are changing the lives of more than 60 young people. We are giving them extremely valuable ideas on how to solve scientific, technological, and social challenges. We hope that these young people will take part in building our future.”
The Hackathon brought together more than 60 students. Discussion platforms were organized for them with the participation of politicians, experts, and researchers. Among them was Ricardo Villalba, laureate of the Konex Prize—one of Argentina’s most prestigious awards for contributions to science and culture.

Over two days, participants discussed the use of nuclear technologies in energy, healthcare, and ecology, overcoming the water crisis, waste reduction and responsible production, social projects, prospects for international cooperation, the integration of Latin American youth into global projects, as well as the development of communication strategies for addressing climate and energy challenges.

The Hackathon began with a discussion session on “Introduction to Nuclear Energy and Ecology,” during which Ignacio Villarroya presented projects dedicated to renewable natural resources.

Former President of the National Atomic Energy Commission of Argentina (CNEA) Adriana Serquis, in a video address, spoke about her research on materials for identifying clean energy sources.
Former Governor of Mendoza Province Celso Jaque,in a video greeting, elaborated on the region’s nuclear energy potential. Federico Uriguen, Institutional Affairs Manager, political scientist, and international relations specialist, presented projects focused on sustainable business development.

Ariel Scagliotti, representative of the National Atomic Energy Company, delivered a report on nuclear technologies applied to combating climate change.

The issues of climate change and the water crisis were discussed in a session by dendrologist and researcher, Konex Prize laureate Ricardo Villalba, representative of the Argentine Institute of Nivology, Glaciology and Environmental Sciences of National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET IANIGLA).
The program concluded with a session on the use of nuclear technologies in agriculture, conducted by Gaston Crauchuk, coordinator for agroecology and biological control at the Institute of Agricultural Health and Quality of Mendoza (ISCAMEN).

The second day of The Hackathon took place at the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences of the National University of Cuyo (the largest higher education institution in the city of Mendoza, Argentina). Young participants discussed issues of climate change, the role of nuclear energy, and modern challenges. As part of The Hackathon program, students developed and presented their own projects.

A highlight of The Hackathon program was a performance prepared by young eco-activists: together, they visualized the structure of an atom.
